Andre Barkhuizen, MD

Andre Barkhuizen MD is a Board Certified Rheumatologist. He moved to Portland, OR in 1994 from South Africa where he trained as a physician at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. He completed a residency in Internal Medicine and a fellowship in Pulmonology and Rheumatology at the University of Cape Town. In Portland he completed a 3 year clinical and research fellowship in Rheumatology before joining the faculty at Oregon Health and Science University and staff physician at Portland VA in 1997. He participated in multiple studies of Gulf War Illnesses and rheumatic diseases. He achieved the rank of Associate Professor and served as Fellowship Director of Rheumatology and was on the Admissions Committee of the Medical School at OHSU.

In 2006 he moved into solo Rheumatology private practice in Portland, OR where he participated in multiple clinical trials in wide spectrum of rheumatic diseases. He had an active patient panel of 1500 patients receiving full spectrum of rheumatologic care including on-site digital x-rays, bone mineral density, laboratory testing and an infusion suite for administration of biologics and parenteral immunosuppressives. He joined Summit Research Network January 2024 to further his career in clinical trials and drug development for broad spectrum of internal medicine, neurological, rheumatic and psychiatric diseases.

He enjoys spending his free time with his family, hiking, camping and all types of water sport including water skiing, wake boarding, windsurfing, kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding. He is an avid supporter of the South African Springbok rugby team and University of Oregon sports, his daughter and son’s alma mater. Go Ducks!
