Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs that is caused by bacteria, fungi, or viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness. Vaccines and healthy living practices help lower the risk of getting pneumonia.

Common Symptoms


Symptoms may vary in severity, depending on what is causing the pneumonia, a person’s age, and overall health. Some signs and symptoms of pneumonia include:

  • Fever, sweating and chills
  • Chest pain
  • Cough
  • Confusion
  • Shortness of breath
  • Nausea
  • Low energy

Pneumonia Vaccine Study

Pneumonia affects millions of people each year. Some people are at higher risk of getting pneumonia including:

  • Children under 5 years old
  • Adults 65 years of age and older
  • People with ongoing medical conditions or weakened immune systems
  • Cigarette smokers

The best way to help prevent pneumonia is to get vaccinated. Summit Research is currently enrolling participants in a pneumococcal pneumonia vaccine study.
