About Binge Eating Disorder

Though we all indulge in a little “extra” food occasionally, those with binge eating disorder have episodes of extreme overeating at least once a week for at least 3 months. It is the most common eating disorder in the United States and does not discriminate. Prevalence rates are comparable among Asian, Black, Latino, and White ethnic and racial groups. Over a 12-month period 1.6% of women and 0.8% of men will develop binge eating disorder.

Binge eating disorder can lead to weight gain / obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, type II diabetes and emotional and mental distress. The good news is that the medical effects of this disorder can be reversed through diet and exercise. Treatment for binge eating disorder may include psychotherapy (talk therapy), behavioral weight loss programs and / or medications.
